Keeping In Touch - Winter 2012
Wow! What a season it's been. Since our last newsletter the team has had a sit down to reflect on 2012 and put plans in motion for 2013 and beyond. We've already told you about our expansion into the Central Belt and we'll have more news to share with you about other developments in the new year. In the meantime, we take great pleasure in wishing you a Merry Christmas and Prosperous New Year when they arrive! Bring on the mince pies.
Struggling for Christmas Present ideas? You can now buy gift vouchers online.
    Central Belt Expansion
Calum and Ross have been busy making new contacts in the area, looking for new venues, joining the Edinburgh Chamber of Commerce and looking for partner businesses to work with. So far so good with 2 or 3 fixed venues we can use as and when necessary. We've also found some great activity locations including Coasteering at Elie, Gorge Walking in Alva, Canoeing in lots of places, Sea Kayaking galore, as well as venues for things like archery, team building, or Highland Games. Work will continue over the winter to build on this, but it's important to know WE ARE NOW TAKING BOOKINGS!! Just in case you were unsure!
    Staff profile - Ross Boardman
Ross joined us a couple of months ago having moved to the Central Belt with his other half. Ross had been managing the team at Outfit Moray for 6 years but prior to that was an instructor with Boots N Paddles. He now brings his considerable experience to our team once again, and will be working as our Operations Manager based in the Central Belt. Want a flavour of what we've let ourselves in for?
Favourite things: Sea kayaking; trips in the campervan with my girlfriend Rosie and Ralph the dog; playing the guitar; camp fires; cheese!
Dislikes: Cycling into a head wind!
Favourite place: That's a tricky one as there are so many amazing places to choose, The west coast, hanging out in the van with a beer after a fun day out.
Little known fact about Ross: I can crochet (very slowly). I make pretty powerful home made wine.
    Year of Natural Scotland
Calum recently attended an event hosted by Visit Scotland and Scottish Natural Heritage. In attendance were all sorts of businesses and organisations with an interest in attracting more people to Scotland's beautiful countryside; encouraging them to explore not only the iconic places that many of us know about, but also the parks and forests on their doorsteps, the local canal perhaps, or even the seaside walk that you've always been meaning to do, but never quite got around to. Although an important aspect of this campaign will be to attract international visitors to our shores, a key aim of the Year of Natural Scotland will be to get us, the people living in Scotland, out and about to see what we've been missing. There will be lots of events across the country over the course of the year, inlcuding the likes of our Early Morning Wildlife Canoe Trip, Great Glen Canoe Expedition or our Family Activity Week. Do try and get along to one of the many events, wherever they are in the country, or even better, organise one yourself!
We'll be at Outdoor Pursuits Scotland in April
On 20-21 April 2013 we'll have a stand at the Outdoor Pursuits Scotland Event at the Corn Exchange in Edinburgh. This is the perfect place to find out about new activities, find new gear and have a fun day out at the same time. There is something for everyone at the show, from kids and families, to the more serious outdoor enthusiast. It would be great to see you there!
You can now book with us online
If you go to our website you'll be able to book canoe holidays, days out or buy gift vouchers without even having to pick up the phone or drop us an email. As our Central Belt business develops we also hope to offer pay and play activities via the booking system as well. This will make things a lot easier for many of our customers, both in the UK and from overseas. However, we are always here to answer questions, give you some advice or just to do things the old-fashioned way if that's what you prefer. Do let us know what you think about it.
    Have you heard about Pinterest?
Pinterest lets you organize and share all the beautiful things you find on the web. People use pinboards to plan their weddings, decorate their homes, and organize their favourite recipes. Best of all, you can browse pinboards created by other people. Browsing pinboards is a fun way to discover new things and get inspiration from people who share your interests. That's the offical description, but in plain language, it's just a brilliant place to find some great pictures and videos. We created some Boots N Paddles Pinboards earlier this year and they're growing slowly but surely in size. Why not have a look and let us know what you think? It's currently the fastest growing social media platform around.

    Surfing in Bali
Let's face it. It's freezing outside and right now in this moment in Bali the waves are perfect and waiting for you.
Our region focus this time is the area of Canguu in Bali. Check out this awesome video of one of the finest surf camps in Canguu, Bali.
    The Surf
    Beginners
For beginners the many semi-beach breaks on our doorstep are ideal for riding your first green wave and improving your take-off. We also regularly go to the famous beach breaks around Kuta, e.g. HalfWay and DoubleSix. We've been checking out these spots for years now and they've certainly proved their worth. Even experienced surfers can get a perfect ride here.
    Intermediates
For intermediate surfers Bali has a whole series of soft reef breaks and semi-beach breaks in store. Many perfect waves nearby or famous spots a bit further away will push your skills and maybe even make you an advanced surfer by the end of your stay.
    Advanced
Of course it is also the advanced surfers that really get their money's worth on Bali. The best waves all round Bali are on our schedule: the legendary Airport breaks, the classic Bali waves such as Dreamland and Balangan or the world famous spots like Padang-Padang, Keramas or Uluwatu. As something of an institution here, we obviously know a few unknown and unsurfed waves - the ones the guidebooks don't know.

10 Tips To Learn How To Windsurf The Easy Way
It's that time of year when we all start to think about summer & what we can do to get out there and make the most of the great outdoors! Windsurfing is a fantastic way to exercise, socialise & have fun but to really enjoy the sport you need to follow these top 10 tips for learning how to windsurf...
    1. Physical & Mental Preparation - Get your body & mind in shape before you even learn to windsurf. Even basic exercises such as squats will really help get your body prepared & a bit of visualisation will really make ALL the difference when learning a new sport. Watch some videos of people learning how to windsurf and then calm your mind and picture yourself going through the movement/skill you are trying to learn. By going through this process you are programming your muscles to do what they will need to do.
    2. Don't learn from family or friends - They mean well & its free for you but it always ends in frustration on both sides. The windsurf equipment is usually old or too advanced & the teaching skills a little questionable to say the least!
    3. Use a windsurf school with a good reputation - A windsurf school with good instruction & up to date windsurf equipment will make a massive difference to your learning. If possible, find and read some testimonials from other satisfied windsurfing students who have been to the windsurf school you are thinking of using. Positive feedback from past windsurfing students is always a good sign that your chosen windsurfing school is doing a good job.
    4. Take Windsurfing Lessons - taking lessons to be shown the actual step by step skills required to learn the basics of windsurfing, including uphauling, static 180 turns, sailing position, steering and if you are going to take a full beginners windsurfing course, how to windsurf upwind/tack & how to windsurf downwind/gybe. All these skills are very specific and detailed but if shown by an experienced instructor, you can learn them easily within the scope of a beginners windsurfing course. The money spent on taking proper windsurfing lessons is so worth it!
    5. Stay Focused - When you are actually out windsurfing there are a lot of factors at play (the wind, balancing on the board, holding onto the sail) and it can take much trial and error to eventually figure out what is going. With some on-land muscle memory training, once you actually get out on the water your body will just go into auto pilot mode thanks to the repeated slow motion training you have been practicing over and over again on dry land. At the Poole Windsurfing School we use a full motion on land windsurf simulator to get students practicing the exact same physical actions they will need to repeat once out on the water. Muscle memory training is an essential part of learning how to windsurf that everyone should practice if they want fast progression.
    6. Set goals - As cheesy as it may be, setting achievable goals is a really good way to push your learning forwards to the next level. The goals you set have to be achievable otherwise the fun of learning just isn't there anymore.
    7. Structure your progress - Mixing your own practice time with further windsurfing lessons will quickly develop your skills. New Detailed Wind & Weather Forecast For Poole Harbour
There is a new kid on the block when it comes to forecasting the wind and weather at Poole Harbour (and most of the world's other great windsurfing locations).
Muchoviento.net is a wind forecast provider for windsurfers, that provides quality wind forecasts for many surf locations in Europe. For us, it not only has a wind & weather forecast for Poole Harbour but also for, Branksome Dene & Boscombe as well! How it differs from other popular wind & weather forecasting websites such as Windfinder & WindGuru is by focusing on local regional weather models & forecasting the wind / weather at a much higher resolution model size.
As the creator of Muchviento.net says. "What makes muchoviento.net different is the fact that we run several regional weather models (eight at the moment; cabeverde is the next to go live) spanning small, "surf hot-spot" areas. Our competitors, e.g. windfinder, runs one large europe model at a grid scale of 12km. We in turn decided to provide several higher resolution models (5km to 8km) for better topography modeling. This greatly improves the ability to include athmospheric effects like sea breezes and orographic effects at mountains." - Michael Scheer, Muchoviento.
The term 'regional weather model' refers to Muchviento's highly sophisticated approach of applying state-of-the-art weather models to small, focused geographic regions. Since the focus is quality, the regions chosen are small and the model is set up to run with a very high grid size resolution. This configuration directly translates into great forecasts: orographic (study of the formation & relief of mountains) and thermal effects can be modeled as well, apparently making a real difference compared to the results of their competitors.
Each weather model has a both a fixed & dynamic aspect to it. The fixed side of things is the topography and the dynamic part is the initial weather conditions at the boundary of the model, which change with each run of the model.
You can see the topography layout for the UK channel model in the 3d-contour plot shown to the right.
Using the forecasts is pretty straight forward:
    1. Bookmark your favorite regional forecast pages directly - its quicker than going through the dropdown menus each time.
    2. Click on Regional Model (0-72).
    3. Read the forecast graph - time across the top & wind strength, gusts, direction, temperature, rain down the side.
    4. For a quick visual reference as to what the wind strength is doing, the charts are colour coded (blue for light wind, green, yellow, orange, red then purple for the strongest winds).
All forecasts are updated every 6 hours and you can find the update cycles for a specific regional model at the top left of each local forecast page. The Global Forecast Model (GFS) button gives values useful for comparison and long-term forecasting - not something your average user needs to use.
So, there you have it another great tool for checking the wind & weather at Poole Harbour and a couple of our other local spots (Branksome Dene & Boscombe).
